Gap Choral and Organ Scholars

If you are on a gap year and would like to join the School community as an organ or choral scholar, please contact Sherborne’s Director of Music, Alexander Eadon: [email protected] / 01935 810 518.

These roles involve assisting in the Music School and with our orchestras and choirs, and singing in the Abbey choir. The appointments run from early September until the Sunday after School term ends in July, and include Christmas and Easter. Accommodation is provided in Sherborne, and scholars receive three meals a day during term time.

School Abbey Choir

With two full choral services in the Abbey every week, our Choristers are well accustomed to the rhythms of liturgy and worship. Boys join the Choir by audition and are given the chance to tackle a broad range of sacred music.

Because it sings so regularly, the choir maintains exceptional standards. There are currently 107 boys in the Choir.

Chamber Choir

Our Chamber Choir is a select group of 22 tenors and basses, and membership is highly competitive. Its repertoire is varied, including music by the likes of Palestrina, Byrd, Lotti and Victoria. The group occasionally appears as Sherborne Close Harmony, performing lighter music at dinners, informal recitals and weddings. This equips members very well to apply for Choral Scholarships at university.

Choral Society

Sherborne Choral Society is a major part of Sherborne’s cultural scene. It consists of 50-80 Shirburnians alongside 50-80 pupils from Sherborne Girls, and around 60 people from the local community, or parents and friends of the School. It performs each February in the Abbey, or in Wells Cathedral for the larger works, accompanied by a professional orchestra and with professional soloists.

If you’d like to join the Choral Society, please contact Sherborne’s Director of Music, Alexander Eadon: [email protected] / 01935 810518. We charge an annual subscription of £20 to cover the costs of rehearsals and score hire.
