Symphony Orchestra

Our Symphony Orchestra is a partnership with Sherborne Girls and The Gryphon School. It gives pupils a chance to perform in a large orchestra. Entry is by audition at the start of each academic year.

Entrants usually need a minimum of Grade 7 to apply and then the orchestra rehearses for an hour and a half each week in our Tindall Recital Hall. This orchestra regularly performs in Bristol, Oxford and London.

Sinfonia

The Sinfonia is another joint endeavour with our partner schools. It rehearses at Sherborne Girls and performs two concerts each year in the local area. Many members progress to the Symphony Orchestra once they have reached an appropriate standard.

Symphonic Strings

Symphonic Strings meets weekly to rehearse in so-called ‘Q Time’ and performs three or four concerts per year. Entry is by invitation, often followed by an audition, and membership is considered to be prestigious.

Concert Orchestra

Each summer, all of our orchestras combine to create one large Concert Orchestra. This performs in the annual Gala Concert at Commemoration. In some years, it then goes on an international tour – giving boys a wonderful experience of performing abroad.

Radio Orchestra

Very often the Trinity Term also sees the formation of a Radio Orchestra akin to the great BBC Radio 2 tradition of light music. Adding strings to the Big Band, the orchestra accompanies jazz vocalists in the music of Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé and others.
