Family and friends of the Sherborne Schools' community gathered in the Merritt Centre on Sunday 17th November at 3pm to hear the combined orchestral forces from Sherborne School, Sherborne Girls, Leweston and and the Gryphon School. The concert opened with a rousing rendition of the March from Holst's Second Suite in F major, Op. 28, No. 2 performed by the Sherborne School Wind Band, conducted with precision by Hugh Davies. This 77 piece wind, brass and percussion ensemble demonstrated rhythmically taught ensemble playing and effective dynamic contrasts in Fraser's The King of the Mountain, elegantly conducted by Clare Jackson. The Sherborne School Barbershop gave a spine tingling performance of the traditional Scottish song, Loch Lomond, arranged by Overton with a fine opening solo sung by Nathanael Fagerson and took the audience on a lively Bermuda Buggy Ride (Talbot Brothers, arranged Vanguard) and finishing with a 'Jave Jive' nightcap, arranged by Coleman. Sherborne Girls Cantilena Trio demonstrated fine ensemble playing and the angelic voices of Sherborne Girls Madrigal Society delighted the capacity audience. The grand finale featuring the combined forces of the Sherborne Schools' Symphony Orchestra brought the concert to a colourful close with solid performances of the first and third movements of Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite, the Scherzo from Glazunov's Suite: From the Middle Ages, Op. 79 and Schubert's Rosamunde Overture, D.644.
