At Sherborne, singing is a central part of our strong and living musical tradition. Supporters of the Friday lunchtime recital series were not disappointed on 29th November when they gathered in Cheap Street Church to hear fine solo performances from our boys featuring arias from the 18th century oratorio repertoire and 20th century English songbook. Charlie Burtt opened the concert with a beautiful rendition of Britten's Ashgrove and Angus William's delighted the audience with his devoted performance of Thou art gone up on high from Handel's Messiah. Edward Pinnock sang Quilter's Blow, blow thou winter wind with melancholic sensitivity and Jordan Mwangola gave a committed and stirring performance of Revenge Timotheus cries from Handel's Alexander's Feast. Technical assurity and expressive vocal colour was demonstrated by both Sam Talbot-Williams in Handel's With pious hearts from Judas Maccabaeus and James Miller in Finzi's Fear no more the heat o' the sun. The concert finale showcased Nathanael Fagerson's accomplished vocal control and characterisation in Schubert's demanding and dramatic lied, Erlkönig, magnificently accompanied by Martin Walker.
