With the Michaelmas term now in full swing, our thoughts are with last summer’s Upper Sixth leavers as they embark upon the next chapter of their lives at university and beyond. We are also pleased to share news of the revised A level grades, a significant number of which have been raised on appeal. Half of all our 2017 A level entries have now been awarded A* or A grades. We are particularly pleased that the A* pass rate has risen to 22.5% (compared to 8.3% nationally), which is a new School record. That almost a quarter of our A level entries were awarded this top grade is a remarkable achievement on the part of the boys and all those who taught and supported them.
Twenty-five boys secured straight A* and A grades including Oscar Norris and Will Shardlow with four A*s apiece; Thomas Brooke, Henry Dennis and Douglas Mak, each with three A*s and one A; Jaroslavs Maksimovs with three A*s, one A and one B; Tom Pentreath with three A*s; and Harry Clark, Tom Crinks, Gabriel Healy, Alex McNair Scott, Columbus O’Donnell and Ben Orton with two A*s and one A each.
As our boys take up their places at a host of leading universities at home and abroad, including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, UCL, Durham, Edinburgh, LSE, Bath and Imperial College, we wish them continued happiness and success now and in the future.
With our new cohort of Sixth Formers taking on the baton we could not be more excited about their academic and co-curricular potential. Tom Rimmer, the School’s New Assistant Head (Sixth Form), commented:
“The record-breaking class of 2017 have left an enormously impressive legacy that could easily be daunting for the new Upper Sixth. In this time of increasing academic rigour, it would be easy to set modest targets but I am delighted to report that they have already set their sights on even greater success this summer. It has been a real pleasure in my first few weeks to see so many up in the Careers Department, eagerly planning for the future, writing personal statements and preparing a range of university and apprenticeship applications so I look forward to the offers flooding in and the hard work beginning in earnest. Hot on their heels, and on the back of some excellent GCSE results, the Lower Sixth have returned to School in their new suits and, more importantly, with a renewed determination to seize all of the opportunities available to them at Sherborne. The plethora of sporting, musical, creative and enrichment courses available will certainly keep them busy over the next two years but their focus will undoubtedly be on achieving their academic ambitions and matching, if not exceeding, the high standards set over the last few years.”
