On Wednesday 10 November, our Lower Sixth mathematicians were lucky enough to be able to (virtually) attend a conference titled How Maths Can Save The Planet! It was a timely event that coincided with the COP26 summit with some of the speakers joining the conference directly from Glasgow. The lectures examined how partial differential equations might be used to model changes in the thickness of ice and a look at the scalability of our carbon emissions to make them relevant to changes in our everyday lives. The event was part of a busy week in the Department for our students given that c. 100 boys competed in the first round of the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge the following morning. More news to follow once the results are published and thanks in particular to Maths teacher, Katrina Evans for her help in organising these events.
