It has been a busy term in English, with the introduction of several new societies. Mr Payne has been hard at work on the School’s new literary magazine and the Sixth Form have started a book club currently exploring the Gothic genre.
The Department was also excited to welcome Kevin Bennett from the Globe Theatre in the latter half of the term. In an action-packed 90 minutes he took the Upper Sixth English Literature students on a virtual tour of the Globe before delivering a workshop exploring the relationship between Polonius and Ophelia in Hamlet. As a professional director, Kevin introduced the boys to some of the techniques he uses in the rehearsal space and encouraged them to look at how we read and interpret Shakespeare in a new way. Oscar Welchman (U6b) described how the session changed his perspective on the play: “Kevin demonstrated to us how the vast number of interpretations are expressed in dramatic theatre, and taught us about the history of The Globe and the Shakespearean dramatic experience. It was fun, interactive, and informative.” The department hopes to welcome Kevin back in the near future.
