Geology field trip to the Isle of Purbeck

Sherborne Boys are now able to undertake a Geology GCSE, in addition to their other studies, as part of the School’s extensive enrichment programme. Geology has a significant practical element so naturally we took the boys on a field trip to test out their skills. Thankfully, you do not have to travel far to find fascinating subject matter when the famous Jurassic Coast is on your doorstep.

Over the course of the day, we visited three locations at two different ends of a monocline. Initially, we were based at the iconic Durdle Door exploring the surrounding limestone, clay, greensand and chalk. In the afternoon travelled deeper onto the Isle of Purbeck where we compared the limestone at Peveril point and then the Wealden clay at Swanage Bay.

The six students currently on the course are now in the process of writing up, what are sure to be interesting, projects.
