Congratulations to our Fourth Form boys who summited Kilimanjaro during the summer holiday; Ben Walwyn (whose brother summited back in 2015), Seb Stannah, Cass Mcloughlin and Arthur Mann. The boys were accompanied by two of the boys' fathers Paddy Stannah and Andrew Walwyn and the trip was arranged with Nature Discovery based in Arusha.
Plenty of long training walks had been taken along the coastal path in Devon and Ridgeway in Dorset for preparation of what lay ahead. The boys followed the “Machame” route which consisted of six days and five nights in total on the mountain. The trek started at a whopping 1840m – well above the height of Ben Nevis and the journey was varied, beginning in the rain forest, then into a barer landscape, onto desert surroundings and then -15 -20 degree temperatures at the summit.
Andrew Walwyn commented:
"Summit day involved rising at midnight and starting the final trek in the dark. It was incredibly hard, especially the last 250M to the crater edge where the freezing cold took its toll until the sun came up. It really was quite an achievement to get to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5895M. Everyone had arrived by 7.15am - Seb Stannah being the first boy to the top!!"
