On Wednesday 2nd March the Lower Sixth chemists went on their annual Chemistry trip to Bristol University in order to spend a day in the university laboratories. Whilst there, they extracted caffeine from tea using solvent extraction, suction filtration and rotary evaporation. They then checked the purity of their labours using a melting point analysis and finally an infrared spectrum. The day finished with a tour of the laboratories, which included the resident glassblower’s lair.
