Christmas concerts in the days preceding the end-of-term Carol Service have continued the seasonal spirit which started last Sunday with the Advent Carol Service when the Choir was on spectacular form. First, a Fifth Form Music Scholar woodwind quartet (Cassian Blackburn-Enever—flute, George Lewis—clarinet, Nathanael Fagerson—bassoon and Benedict Mercer—French horn), gave a recital in the Yeatman Hospital on Thursday. Each member of the quartet performed a solo in addition to performing as an ensemble, and the recital concluded with some Christmas carols. Tea and homemade Christmas cake provided the opportunity for performers and audience to mix and celebrate the first week of Advent.
Secondly, the ‘Cheap Street Christmas Tree Festival’ hosted the last of this term’s Friday lunchtime recitals. With music by Schumann, Quilter, Georges Hüe, Mozart, Schubert and Mozart, six Music Scholars entertained a large audience in the festive spirit of the season. Will Banks (L6b) and Peter Folkes (U6a) sang Quilter’s O lovely rose and Schubert’s Der Neugierige respectively, Joss Nelson (U6e) gave a performance of the third movement of Mozart’s Horn Concerto no 3, George Jefferson (5e) played Clementi’s Sonata in G, Op 1 No 2 and Charlie Smith (U6g) gave a stunning performance of Hüe’s Fantaisie from the LTCL performance diploma programme on which he was examined last week.
