A bronze bust of Alan Turing was unveiled at Sherborne School on Saturday 26th June 2021.
Former Sherborne resident, Kathryn Ballisat, inspired by Turing's story and his connection to the town, commissioned David Williams-Ellis, to create the bust of Turing. Williams-Ellis is an internationally acclaimed sculptor, most recently known for his piece commemorating the D Day Landings at Ver-sur-Mer. The bust was unveiled by Turing’s nephew and former Sherborne pupil, Sir John Dermot Turing (Sherborne School 1974-78), and now stands on a plinth in the School grounds.
Alan Turing (Sherborne School 1926-31) is today one of the School’s most famous former pupils. The face of the new £50 note and one of the nation’s greatest icons of the 20th century, Alan Turing is an inspiration to the whole Sherborne community and the unveiling is a celebration of his pioneering work and his impact on both science and society today.
